Riphagen was a skilled con man who was able to convince Jewish families that he would hold their valuables for them and help them leave the Netherlands. Fan Thoughts: The premise of the film, based on the true story of Dries Riphagen, reminded me of the true crime book Death in the City of Light in that both involve a powerful person conning desperate people for their own gain and leading them to their deaths.
